What if companies were responsible not just for what they sell — but also for what happens after you throw it away?

On July 28th, a new Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) system was proposed, aiming to shift responsibility for waste management — especially packaging — from the public to producers.

This system would require producers and possibly importers to take charge of their product’s full life cycle — from design to disposal.

The draft was developed by experts from the AUA Acopian Center for the Environment, with support from the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida).

According to Lusine Avetisyan, the Head of the Strategic Planning Department of the Ministry of Environment, a series of public discussions is planned with all relevant stakeholders — producers, importers, consumer organizations, and more — to ensure inclusive and balanced policy development.
